What Makes You Happy?

A friend randomly asked me this question today and I wanted to share my response with you all here. Just to provide some more context, I recently started watching Iyanla Vanzant’s ‘Fix My Life’ series and it has been thought-provoking. One of the things that I took away from the episode I watched yesterday is that we rarely ask questions that probe into who we are and gives us new insights about ourselves.

In my response to my friend, four things came to mind which I’ve shared below;

1. A good relationship with God 

This is probably the most important one for me. A good solid relationship with God gives me depths of happiness that I cannot describe. I am constantly working on attaining the contentment and joy that comes from living in accordance with God’s will.

Verily, in the remembrance of Allah do hearts find rest.” (13:28)

2. Living in alignment with who I truly am 

This is another one that is extremely important to me. I am in a state of joy when I live authentically and without fear of judgement. And this means that I stay true to who I am, that I honour myself and that I don’t feel the urge to please others.

3. Mindfulness

At the core of it, mindfulness is about living in the moment and being present. Sadness or anxiety tends to be generated when we live in the past or project too much into the future. Through being mindful, I am happy because it allows me to be grateful and focus on the present as well as connect with others in a meaningful way.

4. Living a life of service

My being and existence is all about living a life of service.  I feel most happy and fulfilled when I am helping others and making a difference in their lives. And that goes for family, friends, colleagues, strangers to the whole entire world.

This is my list for now and of course, actions such as writing and spending quality time with friends makes me happy but these all fall under the four things I have listed above.

  1. I think some of my happiness is based on gratefulness – just being glad I have what I have and not comparing myself to others. I completely agree with being true to yourself and being secure in who you are. That also means I have no expectations from other people, I never feel let down that way and only look to Allah for anything I need!
