Book Review: Daring Greatly, How the Courage to Be Vulnerable Transforms the Way We Live, Love, Parent, and Lead by Brene Brown

Blurb

In Daring Greatly, Dr. Brown challenges everything we think we know about vulnerability. Based on twelve years of research, she argues that vulnerability is not weakness, but rather our clearest path to courage, engagement, and meaningful connection. Whether it’s a new relationship, an important meeting, the creative process, or a difficult family conversation. Daring Greatly is a practice and a powerful new vision for letting ourselves be seen.

The Review

Daring Greatly is a book that will speak to a lot of people’s experience on shame and vulnerability. From the first chapter, I had to get flash cards to make notes because so much of the content spoke to me. A lot of the content particularly on vulnerability were ideas and thoughts that I knew but hadn’t articulated until reading the book.

The book is an easy and smooth read, and the conversational style makes the reading process engaging. The research and anecdotes were extremely eye opening and contextualised Brene Brown’s theory and content on vulnerability.

Shame is something a lot of us are taught from a very young age and when not addressed properly can inhibit growth and development. I would definitely recommend this book for people of all ages and I am looking forward to reading it again at the end of the year and sharing some personal reflections with you all. I cannot recommend this enough!

Top Three Quotes

“Someone else’s daring provides an uncomfortable mirror that reflects back our own fears about showing up, creating, and letting ourselves be seen.”

“In practising self-love over the past couple of years, I can say that it has immeasurably deepened my relationships with the people I love.”

“There’s a crack in everything. That’s how the light gets in.”
